That trajectory included a period of homelessness and days when we’d look in the cupboard or refrigerator and see nothing. Throughout my life, my mom had to make extremely difficult decisions, which would ultimately set our family on a trajectory that changed all of our lives.

When my faculty members and advisors thought I was being so helpful to clean up after events, I was taking that food home to eat it for days at a time, just so I could make do.After many formative work experiences in the U.S. I had to prioritize tuition and rent over food, so I often skipped meals and just didn’t eat. On the inside, I was starving, even while working two to three jobs just to support myself. From the outside, people saw an active, engaged, happy and healthy student. We know our students are utilizing this resource, and that’s exactly the way we want people to think of it. Our grassroots team composed of students, staff and faculty-led efforts to create a student-centered resource on campus with the sole purpose of making strides toward progress on this complex issue affecting countless students.“We’ve seen close to 4,000 visits in the first year alone. Programmatic strides to address food insecurity were taking place across the campus for many years prior to 2014, but the survey data gave us the momentum to develop a program that could holistically address the challenge of food insecurity at K-State. Our students were not only skipping meals, but they also didn’t have the means to pay for groceries and their most basic needs. I had the qualitative data through students’ stories, but I needed the quantitative data to find a solution.“We surveyed students in 2014 and found that on a regular basis, our students’ needs were outpacing their resources. Although I was serving in an academic capacity, my own life experience and training as a licensed marriage and family therapist compelled me to ask other questions like, ‘when was the last time you ate?’ Far too often, that answer was something none of us would want to hear. If we want our students to be engaged and academically successful, and developing personally and professionally so they can go into their field of study as people who are socially justice minded and understand what it means to be a citizen of the world, they can’t do that if they can’t engage in higher learning. We need to make sure students know about this resource to supplement their academic experience, just like they would access tutoring. We hear the romanticized version of the college student eating ramen noodles and mac and cheese every day, but why? It doesn’t have to be that way, and we know it. Then by the spring semester, that housing is no longer secure. We’ve found from our first semester to our second semester, many of our students started off with secure housing. Often, when someone has a deficit in the area of food insecurity, there might be other areas in their life where they need additional support. There’s no reason any one of our students on campus should have hunger be the barrier to their academic success.“At the beginning of each semester when students come to “shop” at Cats’ Cupboard, we also ask them fill out a survey because we want to keep our data current, and we want to assess the other needs they might have. ![]()
